I attended a sweep in Minehead, which had a wood burning stove, initial observations of the chimney were of a good standard from outside.
Preparing Room for Sweeping
I take time and care to cover the flooring and furniture and move any ornaments to protect them from soot. While wearing the correct PPE, I made a start carefully taking out the firebricks and removing the baffle plate. On inspection of the baffle plate, I noticed that the fire rope behind it was in a poor state and so replaced it.
Ready to Sweep
Starting on the sweep, I cleared the surrounding area of the stove first, I then put the first brush up the liner. Once the first brush was in, I then proceeded to cover the fireplace to stop soot going into the room and swept the rest of the chimney.
This was a relatively easy sweep, you could tell the owner burns the correct fuel due to the fine consistency of the soot that came down, there wasn’t very much soot which suggests they have it regularly swept too.
Certifying the Sweep
On completion of the sweep, I performed a smoke evacuation test to ensure a good draw up through the chimney.
Finally I took time to sweep up, vacuum and put everything back into its place before issuing a chimney sweeping certificate.
