This job involved a sweep on a multi fuel woodburner that had not been used for 4 years. The customer wanted to go back to using her stove to reduce costs in the winter due to rising fuel prices.

The stove was quite old but still in good condition accept for some rusting on the baffle plate. This could be due to lack of use as stale air sits inside the stove and slowly corrodes it. I suggest simply opening your stove regularly to allow air flow to circulate which can reduce the risk of corrosion. The chimney pot had a cowl on it to prevent birds nesting and the elements getting into the liner.

The Sweep

I carefully prepared the room’s furniture and carpet with dust covers and plastic before opeing the woodburner and removing the baffle plate above the firebox. The stove was reared flued using a vitreous T-piece and so it’s not uncommon to find large amounts of soot deposited along the horizontal section, The soot was of fine consistance and after clearing I fed flexible rods through the T-piece and continued to sweep the flexible lliner. The liner was fairly clean and the soot within it was also of good fine consistency. Despite the stove’s age the fire rope was in good condition and did not need to be replaced.

Further inspection

My next job was to inspect above the register plate. The register plate above the wood burner seals off the chimney from the room and generally has hatches which allows access to inspect inside the chimney. Unfortunately, when opening the hatches there was a large amount of creosote, on the reverse side. Creosote is highly flammable and although it was not inside the liner itself, it could still have posed a fire hazard as liners get extremly hot. I removed the creosote and then took care to tidy away. Finally I issued a sweeping certificate.
